About Atef

My name is Atef, and I love teaching Egyptian Arabic. I have a broad range of interests, including walking, traveling, cinema, creating and playing games, both physical and electronic and learning new languages. I speak Arabic natively, English fluently and I'm conversational in German and Vietnamese. I lived in Cairo most of my life, two years in Esperance, WA, a year and a half in Arnhem land and currently, I live in North Melbourne, where I am studying for a master's in Teaching. I enjoy finding shared interests with people of all backgrounds and ages.

My teaching style is geared towards you becoming conversational as soon as possible. Each lesson starts with me explaining a key grammatical concept and vocabulary to practice this grammar structure in conversation. We repeat the new grammar and vocabulary in imaginary scenarios until you're confident. Then, we chat about a topic that interests you while I collect the new words you need to express yourself and after the lesson, I share all collected words and sentences in both Arabic and English. For a fee, I can turn your own words and sentences into flashcards that help you memorize them (I record audio so you can practice your pronunciation). The free flashcards app tests you on a set number of words daily. Lessons are typically an hour long, and I teach all levels of all ages.

  • Did you grow up speaking this language? Or were you inspired by a trip abroad, an individual or a certain aspect of the culture?

Yes. Egyptian Arabic is my mother tongue so I have spoken it all my life.
  • Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

I wouldn't be able to name one character. But I can say that listening to teenagers gathering around street food carts before school in Cairo's early morning has always been a pleasure. Egyptian Arabic is so living a language that new words are created all the time and teenagers in my opinion are the biggest contributors.
  • Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or expression in the language that you particularly like?

Yes. So, in Egypt, when you greet someone in the morning, you'd usually say "sabah el-kheir" basically wishing them "a morning of goodness". However, people use all sorts of nice things instead of the word "kheir" or goodness. You can wish people a morning of beauty, flowers or roses amongst many others. My favourite one is "sabah el-reda" which wishes people a morning of contentment. I think it's such a lovely thing to wish people as they start their day.
  • Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Egyptian Arabic carries a very rich culture and history and is full of expressions that came from millennia of history and as you learn it, or even teach it, you constantly come across interesting facts.
  • What is the main difficulty in learning this language, and what can help the process of learning?

The main difficulty is the wrong impression that it's a hard one to learn. In fact, it's more similar to English than French, German or Italian in terms of how sentences are built.
  • How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

I didn't think that travelling and learning new languages would teach me about my own language, but it did! I saw similarities between Vietnamese and Egyptian Arabic, which helped me understand why Egyptians use certain words. Like, using different hows. One to ask "how something is" and another to ask "how something is done".
