About Elif

I am a graduate of Turkish Language and Literature and have a master's degree in the same field. I am currently preparing my doctoral thesis in the fields of Turkish language, literature and culture. In addition to my academic studies, I have a diction certificate and pedagogical formation. In my four years of teaching Turkish as a second language, the joy I find in guiding students on their language-learning journey is truly immense. Tailoring my teaching to fit the age and proficiency levels of my students brings me great satisfaction. More than just language instruction, I love sharing insights into Turkey and its rich cultural tapestry. Teaching Turkish isn't just a job for me; it's a genuine source of delight.

  • 1) Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I speak this language fluently because I love this language and culture. It is certainly true that I am inspired by my origins and my teachers. These are two important factors in learning a language. My teachers and professors in Turkey and the UK have certainly inspired me to speak and study this language, literature and culture.
  • 2) Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

Turkish language and culture has many important representatives and characters such as Nasreddin Hoca, Karagöz-Hacivat, Aşık Veysel. In addition to these, Barış Manço is one of the important representatives of Turkish language and culture. It is possible to find signs of Turkish culture in his songs and clips.
  • 3) Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behavior in the language that you particularly like?

One of my favourite traditions in Turkish culture is the evil eye bead. It is generally believed that people will be protected from bad eyes with the evil eye bead that they carry on their person or keep in their homes.
  • 4) Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Speaking this language is important because I think it is the best, fluent and correct way to express my feelings and thoughts. Every language has its own forms of expression. These are specific to that language and culture. Therefore, it is very important for me that the people who will learn this language also want to express their feelings and thoughts in Turkish. For this reason, it is not enough for me to give the meaning of the word or grammar in my lessons. The person should express his/her own feelings and thoughts in accordance with the way of thinking and expression in Turkish.
  • 5) What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

There are difficulties in learning any language. These difficulties begin with the alphabet. Difficulties in making sounds, learning the grammatical structure of the language and pronunciation are common difficulties. It is very important to learn the grammatical structure of Turkish and the equivalents of the sounds. It is important to learn to think in Turkish.
  • 6) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

Learning a language has always been a challenge. Turkish is a language with words that, because of their structure, have many layers of meaning. The fact that a word can have more than one meaning makes it necessary to know all the meanings. If you do not know all the meanings, you can misinterpret the context. This was an important experience for me that I learnt at school.
  • 7) How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

No language can ever be learnt from books or grammar alone. Hearing a language in its own place, seeing how people use that language is very important for learning that culture and language. Therefore, my recommendation for Turkish language learners would be to visit Turkey. Thus, their exposure to Turkish increases and they witness the language and culture directly. They will have the chance to practice Turkish and see Turkish culture. For this reason, travelling to the centre of the language you are learning is always beneficial and advantageous.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof in language?

I study Turkish language and literature. I love this language and culture. It is very meaningful for me to help and guide my students in the world they create with a new language-culture. It is very important and valuable for me to teach people this language and culture that I love to study and speak.
