To Whom It May Concern,
I highly recommend Vera Balmont for the Spanish teaching position at Amherst Regional High School. Vera taught Spanish with me in the World Language department as a long-term substitute in the spring of 2019. She taught two sections of Spanish 3, and she did nothing short of a terrific job. In June of 2019, she returned to Spain to finish her degree in Communications and Journalism.
While teaching Spanish at the high school, Vera also worked as a bilingual interpreter with the English Language Learner (ELL) department. Vera interpreted for Spanish speaking students in Science, Math, and English classrooms. In addition to Spanish and English, Vera is also fluent in Russian, French, and Catalan. While Vera was working full time at the high school, she took a full course load at UMass Amherst in the Communications department. In her free time, she hosted a radio show at UMass radio.
While working with Vera, I observed firsthand a colleague who is passionate about everything she does and holds high expectations for herself and her students. Vera is proficient in all aspects of technology and seamlessly incorporates multimedia into her lessons. Vera has a deep sense of social justice and prioritizes classroom culture and community. Vera enhanced the curriculum with engaging multicultural experiences for her students that included music, food, dance, art, and sports. Vera's lessons were always relevant to today's youth. She prioritized oral communication and made sure every student had the opportunity to speak in class.
One of my favorite memories of working with Vera was a soccer tournament she organized between the four Spanish 3 classes. She taught her students the soccer vocabulary and expressions in Spanish in preparation for the big match. She was their biggest fan when they went on the field that day. She actively cheered on her students in Spanish on the sidelines. She even made paper crowns for all of her students to wear after the game and called them "Reyes y Reinas de Español" (Kings and Queens of Spanish) that the students wore proudly throughout the day.
Vera effortlessly connects to her students and creates meaningful relationships. Students have told me they genuinely enjoyed her class and were saddened to learn she would not return the following school year. Vera left a lasting impact on her students and the high school. I am confident that given another opportunity to return to the district, she will prove to be an asset to our department and high school.
If you have any questions regarding Vera Balmont's candidacy for employment, please do not hesitate to contact me by phone or email.
Sincerely,

Vera’s easy rapport with the students meant that she built trust with them quickly. Many of my students were new to both the United States and the routines of schooling, and she modeled good studentship skills and helped them get accustomed to our school environment and culture. She was only assigned as a language interpreter, but she found herself with a free period at the end of the day and volunteered in my last class, usually taking a group when we broke into small groups, and leading them in a mini lesson and guided practice. She supported students through a variety of academic, emotional and interpersonal challenges throughout the year, and I could always count on her to be there when I needed to leave the room or just provide a little extra guidance to a group of students. I have no doubt that she will make a wonderful educator.
