About Allison
Hi y'all! I'm Allison. I am a teacher, a PhD student, and a pug mum. I have taught public speaking, writing, and communications to students from age 6 to 65 for a decade. Over the last two years, I have been working with students with ASD to develop communication and public speaking skills-- both as children and adults. I am a certified public speaking instructor, a lecturer, and a former high school speech and debate coach, so I have worked with kids across the spectrum and am (of course) advanced DBS checked. My autistic students have been such a joy to work with the last few years, and watching them grow in confidence communicating -- both formally and informally -- has been the highlight of my professional life. I have references available upon request.

Do you worry about your child's ability to express their thoughts, feelings, and brilliance to the world? Do they struggle with organising and articulating their thoughts? Or maybe you notice they struggle to find the right words to express themselves to teachers, friends, or family? Perhaps, your child is just looking to build meaningful relationships and reduce isolation. If any of these scenarios are familiar, I might be the right tutor for your child! My teaching method is based on their unique needs. As a former public speaking and communication teacher in schools, I have worked with ASD students, and now in private tutoring, I have made it my focus. Teaching students on the spectrum has involved trial-and-error, but over time, I have developed a range of methods to increase their confidence in communication-- focusing on their own strengths and NEVER pushing them into territories of too much discomfort. Trust is key, and communication should help build that. I do an offer a (free) 30 minute lesson with all students (and their parents) where we talk through their struggles and goals. Then, I set a plan for the future based on your objectives. My not-so-secret approach is that we make it fun! Few kids want to go to extra school, but I try to make it as engaging and impactful as possible.

I have had the honor of knowing Allison for nearly 14 years now, and have seen her speak in a wide variety of venues. Allison is a phenomenal public speaker, but more, she is an equally fantastic coach and mentor. She is extremely talented at helping her mentees rigorously research topics of interest and proceed to construct well-structured speeches. But I think what additionally distinguishes Allison is the fact that, above all, Allison centers the growth of the individuals she mentors.
Allison helps her mentees become better public speakers through skill, like other coaches. But Allison also ensures that these skills go hand in hand with building the self-confidence of the mentee she is working with. She sees her mentees as people first and foremost --- I have witnessed many situations in which Allison was far more understanding, empathetic, and constructive then any mentor or coach I have seen before. I believe that anyone lucky to have her as a public speaking coach or mentor is guaranteed to be very successful, with Allison helping build that success on a deeper foundation of her mentees' passion, self-confidence, and other attributes that are core to who they are.Allison has helped take my writing from decent to outstanding. She has provided wonderful guidance, coaching, and edits for writing I have completed in both academic and professional settings, including my graduate thesis and application materials for scholarships and jobs. Allison is also very personable and patient and helped improve my self-confidence as a writer. I highly recommend her!
Allison wrote many of my speeches while serving on elected positions. I would provide her with my ideas and she put them in speech form and worked with me on delivery. She also reviewed articles for publication and vastly improved them.
Allison helped me immeasurably with application essays when I decided to pursue a public health graduate degree, after 30 years of practicing medicine, but no recent academic experience. She can help you organize and assemble your thoughts - and can ably coach you to present them, whether written or spoken. She has the knowledge, insight, and confidence to help you succeed. I can’t recommend her strongly enough!
I have known Allison for many years, starting with our time competing together on a university speech and debate team. By far the most accomplished speaker and communicator I know, Allison also has a knack for passing down those skills to her students. I would 100% trust her to improve anyone's public speaking skills, regardless of experience, age, or background. Learning from her is an absolute joy.
I work for a large medical corporation in the US. Allison taught me business presentation skills to help me overcome my severe anxiety in presenting. We did speaking drills, structure lessons, and lots of practice speeches. I still feel nervous, but when I give executive level presentations, I no longer worry about how I will sound because I know I have the tools to do a good job.
Former Oxford grad, now working at Big 4 Consultancy.
I regularly use Allison for support in improving document structure and flow. She reviewed my resume and improved it by leaps and bounds, both visually and grammatically.
Additionally, I used her for coaching and feedback when interviewing for a new corporate role at several Big 4 consultancies, and successfully received multiple offers as a result.
10/10 would recommend.Alison McKibban has substantial experience as a very successful competitive speaker and as an instructor in speech and debate. Allison was a nationally ranked speech competitor throughout her high school and university years in the U.S. She was in the top 5 current events speakers in the U.S. in 2017. During her competition years, she was universally regarded as among the top 1% of competitive speakers. Allison combined her incredible talent with a passion for speaking on social justice topics; she has extensive experience not merely as a "good speaker," but also as an ethical speaker. Finally, Allison has extensive experience imparting this skill to others. She was an exceptional peer coach at Rice University and has taught at multiple speech and debate summer institutes. As one of her teachers, I am very proud to say that Allison is herself a fantastic teacher. I strongly encourage anyone seeking rhetorical training to take every opportunity to work with Allison McKibban.
