How to Improve Your English Through a Language School

Language schools are less formal than universities and are a fraction of the cost. They are ideal for English second language speakers or beginner English learners. Their ESL courses are perfect if you want to learn how to speak English fluently. You will learn the basics around English vocabulary, English pronunciation, intonation and oral comprehension.

Language schools are also great at accommodating learners with a set curriculum, suited to their level of English, to guide them in their English writing and reading skills. These language skills, together with your listening skills will enable you to fast-track your English fluency and an English course will generally cover aspects like:

  • Grammar lessons and grammar usage
  • Verbs, tenses and nouns
  • Vowels, consonants and intonation
  • General English phrases and English communication skills

BLI (Bay Language Institute) is not only registered with the South African Department of Higher Education, but also carries the accreditation mark of the South African Civil Aviation Authority and Quality Council for trades and Occupations (QCTO).

They recently introduced online courses, offer TEFL courses, and also give students the option to attend daily 90-minute classes for six to eight weeks. With five different levels and fixed start and ending dates you can plan your South African visit around your term dates.

Advanced English Skills at Universities

Those who are passionate about the English language, proficient enough and would like to master their English skills can consider completing a qualification at a Technical College or University. This could either be in teaching English, Language studies, or even a completely different degree in English.

Nelson Mandela University is a public university and the only institution globally that carries the name of one the world’s biggest names in democracy, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. It’s one of the most diverse Universities in South Africa due to its philosophies and the merging of skills and qualifications from the historical PE Technicon, the University of Port Elizabeth (UPE) and the PE campus of Vista University (Vista PE).

A National Senior certificate with university exemption with a good English mark would usually be required for admission. International students require exemption from the Matriculation Board of South Africa (USAf) for undergraduate programs or they would have to prove their proficiency in the English language by conducting an IELTS (International English Language Test Standard) or TOEFL (Test of English as Foreign Language).

Each tertiary institution has their own set or admission requirements, and we recommend you contact the admissions counsellor for specific details.

Nelson Mandela University has an excellent bridging course for English second language or international students who aren’t English native speakers. Students are assessed and placed in the one-year Elementary English class or a 6-month pre-intermediate English class to work towards their acceptance for other Degree or diploma qualifications.

Learn English Your Way with Tutor in Nelson Mandela Bay

Imagine learning English at your pace and the teacher focusses on achieving your objectives? You can practice speaking English by learning well-known English phrases, expand your English vocabulary, try tongue twisters or they can help you improve your English writing – it’s completely up to you and your requirements are.

There are also a whole range of additional benefits to getting your own, private English teacher:

  1. Affordability

The main reason why most students cannot study is unfortunately, the fact that they cannot afford it. A private tutor is affordable and on Superprof you can find students who charge under R100 per class. Just remember that more experienced teachers usually charge more, and you still need to ensure you get the English lessons that will help you achieve your objectives.

  1. Flexible lessons

Tutors offer more flexibility than set courses at schools and universities. This means you can continue to work for an income while you do your lessons at a time that suits both of you. Almost all of the Superprof ESOL teachers offer English lessons online, but if you prefer a public place you can ask them before booking a session.

You can also do lessons dependent on your budget and increase or reduce the amount of classes as you see fit. Private tutors are also great if you want to learn English as a couple, families, school group or work colleagues and not interested in doing a full English course. This way you can also split the costs and get to practice with your learning partner.

  1. Customised curriculum

English teachers and tutors have a passion for their students and getting them to excel. Experienced teachers will help you with a study plan and change the teaching techniques to best suit you. Most of them are also qualified to help you prepare for language exams like IELTS & TOEFL with the benefit of picking up your preparation at your level of English.

Superprof has 297 ESOL tutors that specialise in a variety of English. You can either opt-in for professional English educators, TEFL certified English teachers, or proficient native English speakers who are great at English Pronunciation and in the process of completing their honours degree.

An alternative is finding a second language speaker who understands and has managed to overcome the complexities in learning English. There are thus ample options and opportunities to compare and discover on the Superprof website.

Read, Write, Speak & Smile

Whether you want your spoken English to sound like that of a native English speaker, you aim to take the business world by storm with exceptional business writing, or you simply want to converse comfortably in English, ESL courses and lessons will help you achieve this if English is not your first language.

Luckily you can find the perfect English teacher to help you before you even enrol in a course or move to Port Elizabeth. Superprof ESOL teachers generally offer their first class for free and you can easily compare their skills, fees, speciality and whether they will fit your goals with the training they will provide.

The most important thing is choosing a college, school, university or tutor that will help you find the passion and enjoyment in learning English. That way you’ll be all smiles while learning to master a language that will help you for the rest of your life.
