Avoid the Summer Slide: Should Private Tutors and Holidays Go Together?

For educators, parents, and children, there are wildly varying opinions available regarding whether children should study during their holidays.

Some believe that children regress over the holidays and lose too much of what they have learnt during the term. This perpetuates the thinking that holidays should include time where the brain is kept in an education mindset in a flexible and fun way.

The educator Noel Janis-Norton believes that even just half an hour of basic spelling, handwriting and multiplication is beneficial and not necessarily onerous. According to Janis-Norton, fitting this in, first thing in the morning can make the rest of your child’s day feel like a treat.

But even with the most fun math tutor to help, there is still no consensus on this issue. Some believe that there is not enough evidence to say that using holidays in between term lessons is how to improve your grades. For those in this camp, they believe that even online tutoring during the holidays can create resentment in children who see their neighbours and friends doing fun things while they are slogging away at their trigonometry with a math tutor.

So what’s the answer?

Well like most things in life, balance is a highly underrated idea. So before you continue with your 'home tutors near me' search, consider yet another opinion that believes that over tutoring is unwise versus the need for children to have a more unstructured and purposeless play.

It, therefore, seems safe to say that both adults and children need to create space for vital activities like play in their lives.

Search 'Home Tutors Near Me' and Eradicate Weak Points

Unfortunately, there will always be some subjects that are just trickier than others. Subjects like foreign languages and maths often need the extra assistance of online tutors or in-person private tutors.

If, for instance, your child is struggling with grammar, try searching 'home tutors near me' for an English tutor.

A good math tutor knows exactly how to identify and fill in a learner’s knowledge gaps! Once this happens the learner somehow becomes more confident and they are then able to also set their own pace with the tutor.

One subject that has notoriously challenged even the brightest of learners is maths. Who has not taken to tearing their hair out when it comes to trigonometry, calculus, geometry and algebra? All of these issues can be easily overcome with a good math tutor to bring out the logic that is just waiting to be discovered.

If this sounds appealing, you could search 'home tutors near me' or head straight over to the Superprof website where you will find heaps of tutors, all of whom are credentials-verified, in one place.

Online tutoring is also an excellent idea for high school learners. This gives children access to much help across a great many subjects, especially considering that parents are usually not the experts when it comes to helping with assignments, homework and exam preparation. On the whole, online tutoring can make all the difference to a learner’s overall aggregate and even matric results.

In the same way, you may have a primary school child who is struggling with a foreign language. Often, it is the unhurried time in the school holidays that is just what the doctor ordered for important language development issues to click.

In fact, foreign languages like German, French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian and Chinese are becoming more of a necessity for everyday life. Here, private tutors are the answer when it comes to how to improve your grades (or that of your child’s) and encourage bilingualism.

As a parent, you may recognise that giving your child an advantage in today’s international world means that they learn at least one second language until they have reached reasonable fluency. In-person or online tutoring over the holidays is an excellent way to practice language studies during longer school holidays.

Private tutors for exam preparation are also an excellent way to build confidence, be strategic and ensure good results.

Let's go!

Don’t Waste the Holidays: Create Work Schedules!

Holidays are for having fun and it is actually possible to have fun over the holidays while studying too!

Remember that learners, regardless of how old they are, want to make the most of their valuable holiday time and certainly don’t want to spend it buried in the books.

Parents should always bear in mind not to overwork children and try to choose an appropriate age for beginning private tuition.

One way to make sure that the work gets done and that the child remains balanced is to set up a work schedule. Try to set aside parts of the day for relaxation and other parts for study which can be very effective to achieve both.

You will be amazed at how much harder your child will work when being tutored if they know there’s an entertaining and engaging activity prearranged for afterwards!

For example, try this: “Tomorrow morning you will study and in the afternoon we will head to the beach!”

Motivation, as well as inspiration, are critical to academic achievement.

It’s vital not to overload children of any age with private tuition, if you do, you run the risk of putting children off the whole notion. However, if you can break up an afternoon of one-on-one tutoring with an outing to the cinema, you’ll notice that your learner will tend to work even harder afterwards!

Here’s an example of how to outline an appealing schedule:

Monday 10th August:

  • 9:30-12:00: Math tutor
  • 12:00-14:00: Lunch break at park.
  • 14:00-16:00: Games in the park
  • 16:00-18:00: Visit the aquarium
  • 18:00-19:30: Playstation or TV
  • 19:30-21:00: Supper

Tuesday 11th August:

  • Leisurely breakfast
  • 11:00-12:00: French online tutoring
  • 12:00-14:00: Games with friends
  • 14:00-16:00: Math tutor
  • 16:00-19:30: Birthday party
  • 19:30-21:00: Supper

If you follow a timetable like this, you will see that your child will improve in no time.

What about schedules during the term? One way to organise a schedule is to have private lessons at the weekend.

Use Entertaining Activities (Holiday Workbooks or Outdoor Tutorials)

To break the dreariness associated with revising, you could always consider entertaining and engaging activities like asking the tutor to take your child’s lessons outside.

Let’s face it. Summer is a good time to enjoy the outdoors while digesting important maths concepts under some shady trees. Chances are that these will be remembered over yet another lesson in a stuffy classroom.

Why not ask your child’s private tutor (like those found on Superprof) if they can be creative about where to give lessons especially if you have a reluctant learner who tends to get easily bored? This can work for a group or one-on-one classes.

Holiday workbooks are all the rage! Not only are they fun, but they also cater for every age and level of ability. They are an easy way to make holiday studying appealing, entertaining and effective. Try and find these as well as other useful study guides from a reputable supplier like the Answer Series.

Apps are also a fantastic way to be entertained and educated at the same time! Nowadays, everyone seems to have access to a tablet or a smartphone and one of the best uses for these devices is for learning!

Parents who are weary of seeing their kids attached to their smartphones might be impressed by the number of excellent apps that offer academic support. These are available for children as young as three years old and are aimed at learning about learning, rather than revising and can be very useful.

Don’t forget to check out the App Store or Google Play for a wide range of fun yet educational apps available for your children.

Children are not the only ones who benefit from private tuition, but if like most adults you have a busy schedule, you could hire a private tutor for the evenings.

Use the Holidays for Important Revision Time

Holidays are an important time for relaxing and having fun but are also useful for catching up on any work that was missed as well as for revision of important concepts.

Taking private tutorials during holiday time is an excellent way to benefit those who may be struggling at school or to improve your child’s grades if they are academically ambitious. Holiday tuition can be valuable for ironing out problems so that your child can start the term on a clean slate.

If you don’t want your child to forget everything by the time school reopens, it’s a good idea to review the basics during holiday time. For example:

  • work on a second language with a native speaking tutor,
  • look back over the central mathematical formulae so that your child still recalls it all when they go back to school.

Even during half term, it’s an excellent idea to plan a few extra private lessons where a private tutor can prepare the learner for important exams that need to be faced in the next term

For learners getting ready for their grade 11 and 12 years, they should:

  • revise past papers,
  • study theory
  • work on essay techniques and much more

Eliminate Academic Weaknesses During the Holidays

No educational system or syllabus can suit every child perfectly. Everyone will have a unique weakness and this is why private tuition is so extremely effective.

Another reason for its efficacy is that there are often too many learners in classes which means that it is more difficult to provide every learner with the attention they deserve.

Of course, teachers play an important role in knowing how to adapt lessons for learners. However, it is not easy to do this flawlessly when every child is completely unique and deserving of one-on-one attention.

No two learners are alike. They perform differently and learn differently. Some learners simply have to hear something to get it, while others need to write it too. Teachers have the challenging job of deciding when they can interrupt the flow of the class to explain something in more depth and when they have to just carry on for the sake of the group as a whole. This is why some learners require unique academic support.

Whether it’s with homework help or intensive private lessons, some learners need to catch up or revise certain subjects. One area of study that the general population of learners in South Africa struggle with is maths. One reason for this is that if a child gets lost during maths lessons it can be difficult to catch up because mathematical concepts build on each other.

Another challenge can arise when teachers are absent and substitutes are required. This can result in a lack of consistency and a learner feeling lost.

Also, every teacher has their own strengths, so not every learner will respond to their style in the same way. On the other hand, finding a private tutor to suit your child can completely change the way that they approach their learning and result in completely different academic results.
