I base my classes on the practical experience of what is happening in the real business world. I try and make my students understand three things: the what, why and how? This approach creates interest and a better understanding allowing students to be more creative in their approach to learning, something that academic institutions fail to achieve.

  • When did you develop an interest in your subject and in private tutoring?

My interest in teaching and private tutoring developed after completing my MBA studies. Throughout my studies, I was drawn to the practical and real-world aspects of business, which I found more interesting and relevant than the theoretical concepts taught in the classroom. As I progressed through my career in the financial services industry, I discovered a passion for mentoring and coaching colleagues, helping them apply the practical skills and knowledge that I had gained to advance their own careers.

As a result, I began to explore opportunities to share my expertise and insights with others through teaching and private tutoring. I found that private tutoring, in particular, allowed me to provide a more personalized and flexible approach to teaching, tailored to the specific needs and learning styles of each individual student.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

    Leadership:

I enjoy exploring topics such as developing leadership styles and skills, as well as ethical and strategic leadership. I believe that leadership is a critical component of success in the business world, and I find it rewarding to help my students develop the knowledge and skills necessary to become effective leaders who can inspire and guide others towards achieving organisational goals.
  • Did you have any role models? Perhaps a teacher that inspired you?

Early in my career, I had the opportunity to work with a manager who truly inspired me with their approach to simplifying complex business frameworks. This manager had a talent for taking even the most complicated business concepts and breaking them down into simple, practical terms that everyone on the team could understand and apply.

What I particularly admired about this manager was their ability to use practical analysis to make sense of complex frameworks. Rather than getting bogged down in theory or academic jargon, they focused on distilling key concepts and applying them in a way that was relevant and applicable to our team's work.

Through working with this manager, I learned the value of practical analysis in simplifying business frameworks. I saw first-hand how this approach could help us identify key insights and make better decisions, without getting lost in the weeds of overly complex models or theories.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

    I. Strong subject knowledge: A good tutor must have a deep understanding of the subject matter they are teaching. This allows them to provide accurate and relevant information to their students and answer any questions they may have.

II. Effective communication skills: It is essential for a good tutor to have excellent communication skills, including the ability to explain complex concepts in simple terms, listen actively to their students, and adapt their teaching style to meet their students' needs.

III. Passion for teaching: A good tutor must be passionate about teaching and committed to helping their students achieve their goals. This passion should be reflected in their teaching style and their dedication to helping their students succeed.

IV. Patience and empathy: A good tutor must have patience and empathy towards their students. Learning can be a challenging process, and it is essential for a tutor to be understanding and supportive of their students' struggles.

    V. Flexibility and adaptability: A good tutor must be able to adapt their teaching approach to meet the unique needs of each student. This may involve modifying their teaching style, pacing, or even the content of their lessons.

VI. Continuous learning: A good tutor must be committed to their own ongoing learning and professional development. This allows them to stay up to date with the latest developments in their field and provide the most current and relevant information to their students.
  • Could you share an anecdote related to your subject or your student days?

During my MBA program, I took a course on business strategy that required us to analyse a case study on a company that had recently undergone a major merger. We were tasked with developing a comprehensive strategy to help the newly merged company succeed in a highly competitive market.

As I worked on the case study, I found myself struggling to make sense of the complex data and multiple stakeholders involved. I spent hours poring over financial statements, market research reports, and industry analyses, trying to make sense of it all.

Despite my best efforts, I was still struggling to come up with a cohesive strategy that could be implemented in the real world. That's when I decided to take a step back and look at the bigger picture.

I started by identifying the key challenges facing the newly merged company, and then worked backwards to identify the underlying causes and potential solutions. I also consulted with my classmates and the professor to get their feedback and insights.

Through this process, I was able to simplify the complex data and frameworks and develop a strategy that was both practical and effective. This experience taught me the value of taking a step back and looking at the big picture, rather than getting bogged down in the details.

It also reinforced my belief in the importance of practical analysis in business strategy, something that has stayed with me throughout my career as a strategy consultant and tutor.
  • Did you face any difficulties at school or university?

My experience with the lack of practical examples in graduate school has shaped my tutoring style in several ways. Firstly, it has taught me the importance of providing relevant and practical examples to my students. I always strive to relate theoretical frameworks to real-life situations, drawing from my own experiences in the business world and current industry trends.

Secondly, it has made me more aware of the importance of industry knowledge in teaching. As a tutor, I stay up to date with the latest developments trends and best practices in my field, so that I can provide my students with the most current and relevant information.

Lastly, my experience has made me more patient and empathetic towards my students who may be struggling to bridge the gap between theory and practice. I understand the frustrations that can come with feeling like the material being taught is disconnected from the real world, and I am always willing to provide additional resources and support to help my students gain a better understanding of the subject matter.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general, an element of this particular subject, or something completely different?

In the world of business, I am passionate about pursuing excellence and professionalism. I believe that businesses have a responsibility to operate with integrity, and that individuals should strive to be the best they can be in their professional lives. I am fascinated by the challenges and opportunities that the business world presents, and I am committed to helping others develop the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in this dynamic and ever-changing field.

In the realm of education, I am passionate about sharing knowledge and experience with others. I believe that education is a powerful tool that can empower individuals to achieve their goals and make a positive impact in the world. I enjoy mentoring, coaching, and tutoring, as I find great satisfaction in helping my students grow and develop both academically and professionally.
  • What makes you a Superprof?

What makes me a Superprof is my ability to simplify complex educational concepts and blend them with practical applications in industry sets me apart. I understand that not all students learn in the same way, and I strive to tailor my teaching approach to meet the unique needs and learning styles of each individual.

In addition, I believe that empathy and patience are essential qualities for any effective tutor or coach. I take the time to listen to my students and understand their challenges and concerns, and I work with them to develop a customized plan that will help them achieve their goals.

Finally, as someone with a deep understanding of the South African education system, I am well-equipped to bridge the gap between theory and practice through my tutoring and coaching. I understand the challenges that many students face in accessing quality education and resources, and I am committed to providing the support and guidance they need to succeed.
