What is Mindset Motivation?

So, what is mindset motivation?

One route to understanding this fascinating topic is to look at the work of Stanford University psychologist and professor Carol Dweck who has specialised in the field of mindset motivation for over 20 years.

Dweck’s theory, based on several studies is actually quite simple. There exist two primary mindsets – or ways of behaving and thinking. She calls this the fixed mindset and growth mindset which essentially determines our mental attitude towards our abilities and talents.

Here, it’s important to note that we all exist on a spectrum between both and are therefore influenced by each.

Change Your Mindset, Change Your Abilities 

The fundamental difference between these two frames of mind is in one’s confidence in the nature and source of intelligence.

So, the fixed mindset says that intelligence and talent are fixed: we are assigned a finite amount of intelligence at our birth and this is more or less unchangeable. The growth mindset, on the other hand, says that skill or ability is pliable and that through learning and progress, it can be developed.   

It is quite common to hear people say that they are just no good at languages or maths or music, however, these are perfect examples of a fixed mindset. On the other hand, having the belief that growth is possible in a certain field, regardless of the challenges is an example of someone who has a growth mindset. So then, how does one go about developing a growth mindset?

How Changing Your Mindset Can Change Your Life

Ultimately, the difference between having a fixed mindset and a growth mindset can be something that changes the way behave for the rest of our lives. It can affect the way we handle setbacks and inform us of our lack of passion. It can help to determine if and how we learn new skills or handle the success of other people’s achievements.

Most importantly, Dweck’s theory says that all these things are affected when it comes to how we learn and how successful we will be.

So whether you want to change your mindset in your private or professional life, the good news is that it is possible!

The best way to describe the difference between fixed and growth mindsets is to give some real-life examples.

Most of the examples that Dweck uses originate from the education system because this is where she happened to do her research. The differences are very evident in approaches to growing skills, approaches to learning, and attitudes towards failure or perseverance.

Acquiring New Skills

As already mentioned, one of the main differences between fixed and growth mindsets is how we respond to stressful situations and challenges. Statements like ‘oh, I’m no good at maths’ versus ‘let’s give it a go,’ can make all the difference.

The fixed mindset is grounded on the idea of an inherent ability: in other words, if you were born smart, you will stay smart; if you were not born smart, then there is no way to get smart.

Unfortunately, for those with this attitude, it means that people will not try to learn or grow. It even goes so far as to say that effort is inconsequential because it won’t help!

As a result, people with fixed mindsets tend to avoid challenges that could present setbacks; they won’t take risks or persevere through things that are difficult to achieve. In fact, they will give up or not start because of failure!

Meanwhile, according to Dweck, growth mindset individuals recognise that the mind is in fact neuroplastic and has the ability to develop like a muscle. People like this are usually willing to look at new strategies, navigate challenges, and are open to learning.   

Changing Your Mindset in Relation to Others

Another critical difference between the two mindsets is in their dealings with other people. Essentially, the way we receive both constructive criticism and praise is a determiner of the type of mindset we have.

People with fixed mindsets tend to view others as a challenge to themselves. Whilst opposed to their own personal growth, they also see the achievements of others as a challenge – as something threatening, intimidating, or problematic.

The same applies to constructive criticism or advice from others: people with fixed mindsets tend to view advice as an attack – as though they have somehow done something wrong.

Meanwhile, people with growth mindsets are about openness. The success of other people is not something to be begrudged but something that causes inspiration. Criticism or advice is not seen as an attack but rather as an invitation to growth.

Developing a Growth Mindset

Knowing all this is one thing, but actually finding the mindset motivation to change limiting beliefs is another. So how do you change your mindset to live a more open and successful life?

Fortunately, small changes to your attitude can make all the difference between a fixed mindset and growth mindset. There are also a number of thought experiments available if you want to work on changing your mindset and growing your confidence.

Rethink Your Failures as Lessons

Failures don’t need to be serious events that set you back forever and force you to give up. This is typically fixed mindset thinking.

Instead, developing a capacity for perseverance as you tackle adversity head-on is one of the major hallmarks of a growth mindset. When you begin to see disappointments as opportunities for new growth, lessons can be learned.

When you begin to embrace the fact that the brain develops through making mistakes, you will begin to see them as opportunities that will bring you long-term success.

Reframe The Meaning of Genius

Masterminds are not just the sum total of extraordinary brains. They are not just innate abilities, even Einstein made an effort. Ella Fitzgerald trained her voice to sing like that.

So while we are all born with a seed of talent in certain areas, becoming a genius or superstar comes with effort, grit, and determination.
