Types of Boxing: Boxer's Boxing Styles

Once you start taking up boxing classes, you will get to step in front of a punching bag and find out more about yourself and your boxing style.

When you choose to see boxing as a combat sport, you start to see yourself as a fighter. That is when you realise what type of fighter you are.

You must always take precautions though. Boxing is a combat sport that is certainly not for the faint-hearted.

Can I do boxing?
If you have any medical conditions, you should probably ask your doctor before taking up sports like boxing. (Source: Pexels)

The main styles of boxing are as follows:

  • Brawlers: Brawlers punch without paying attention to the punching styles but brawlers rely on punching to win. Brawlers hardly ever defend themselves and end up getting hit quite often
  • Classic boxer: A classic boxer maintains a distance between himself/herself and his/her opponent so as to tire his or her opponent during the fight
  • Puncher: A type of boxer who goes in with the aim of knocking out the opponent
  • Counter-puncher: A type of boxer who is good at defending himself/herself. He/she can throw in a punch after having avoided a punch

From the overview of the main styles of boxing, you could assume that the brawler is the most violent type of boxer and the classic boxer is one who is great at using a technique to his or her advantage.

In order to do that you need to:

  • Take a free lesson. While the idea of boxing away your stress may be appealing to you,  you need to hit up the punching bags to see if boxing is a good fit for you. After your first free boxing lesson, you can see if boxing is the combat sport for you.
  • Before you start realising your goals from boxing, spare some time for the fun aspect of boxing class. Boxing can be fun. If you feel like you won't be able to find the fun element in boxing if you join private classes, start taking boxing classes with a friend. • Attending a few trial lessons means that you will be able to see if boxing is really for you or not. Once you are satisfied with the combat sport from boxing classes, you will want to invest more time in it.

Styles of Boxing

Once you are satisfied with boxing classes, you can start to consider the different styles of boxing that there are.

You need to choose the right boxing style for you:

Traditional Boxing

Traditional boxing is the core of boxing and makes use of punches. Taking traditional boxing classes will improve your speed.

When you take traditional boxing classes, you will learn how to attack and defend yourself.

Savate

Savate, also known as French boxing is a technique that entails both kicking and punching. Classes in this French boxing style can better your flexibility. Savate is a boxing style that allows for kicks and resembles kickboxing.

Kickboxing

Kickboxing is the type of boxing that you find many ladies getting into. This form of boxing allows you to defend yourself by using your shin or foot too.

If you are interested in taking boxing classes in any of these styles of boxing, reach out to a Superprof tutor nearest to you.

Thai Boxing

Thai boxing or Muay Thai is another type of boxing that allows you to kick, use your knees and elbows. Thai boxing allows you to grab and throw your opponent. Attacks are allowed in Thai boxing. Could we say that Thai boxing is the most aggressive boxing style?

If you are boxing against an opponent during Thai boxing classes, beware as you could get boxed almost anywhere with this style.

Make sure to dodge those unexpected kicks during practice lessons.

As mentioned before, reading about all the boxing styles may very well excite you but have you considered getting in touch with one of the many talented and experienced boxing instructors on Superprof? You can opt for different types of tutorials: group tutorials, face-to-face private tutorials, and even private online tutorials.

Kinds of Boxing Lessons You Can Take

Group tutorials are a budget-friendly way to learn this combat sport. Learning with others can prove to be a fun experience but you may not realise your personal goals with this form of boxing tutorial class.

With face-to-face tutorials, a private tutor tailors lessons specifically for you. You pay for the hour and get the tutor's undivided attention.

Lastly, the internet has allowed the masses to learn almost anything using video conferencing software. All you will need is a webcam, a microphone, and a stable internet connection, and very soon you too can enjoy private boxing tutoring from tutors that may not necessarily be based in South Africa. The rates charged by online tutors are far more reasonable as the tutor does not need to take into consideration any traveling charges when deciding on his or her rate.  While private online lessons are effective, you need to be able to motivate yourself to concentrate and do your best not to make excuses of poor internet connection preventing you from taking these classes.

Before reaching out to one of our Superprof tutors, make sure that you have kept your budget considerations, learning goals, and schedule in mind. On the Superprof site, you will notice many of our tutors offer their first lesson for free. In this way, you can try out lessons with tutors before you actually commit. The free upfront lesson is your chance to get to know your potential private tutor and interact with him or her. You can see what approach the tutor uses and whether you agree with the tutor's tutorial style or not.

One thing you need to keep in mind during your boxing classes and when in the boxing ring:

"You don't lose if you get knocked down; you lose if you stay down." Muhammad Ali

So when taking boxing classes, remember you will lose if you stay away from the classes. Being breathless after a boxing class is in no way a defeat!
