“This isn't just a heavy bag. It's a therapist, psychiatrist, and holistic healer, all rolled up into a glorious, 100lb bag of leather and canvas."- Anonymous

Learn Boxing Techniques

"When life gets tough put on your boxing gloves." - Anonymous

Perhaps joining a boxing club is a way to improve your fitness.  However, if you really think about it everything from traditional boxing to martial arts like Krav Maga is a way for you to let go of your daily stress.

How can boxing help you relax?
While you may have other ways to relax, boxing is probably better for your health. (Source: rawpixel)

Everything from boxing a punching bag or avoiding being kicked just above the belt is a way to unwind fully.  There is no denying that even warming up before you practice boxing can be a healthy way to release the woes of a hectic day. Not only do squats, skipping, and doing burpees prepare your muscles for fighting but it also makes you feel better about yourself.

The warm-up is just part and parcel of a boxing class that helps you to feel good. After warming up, your boxing coach will pair you up with boxing partners. Through boxing with an opponent, you get a sense of power and you are able to perfect your technique- that on its own is the remedy and it can make you feel better. When you find a weakness in your opponent, the joy you feel is undeniable.

In the long run, boxing makes you more flexible and agile.

Looking at your body after a few months of taking boxing classes will automatically make you feel better about yourself. You will have a more toned body, and you would have burnt quite a few calories. That surely will give you a reason to smile despite all the other stress in your life.

Of course, there is no denying that mindful meditation is a wonderful way to release stress but you have to admit that looking into your opponent's eye and throwing in a punch with just the right amount of force will also melt away your stress.

If you are feeling particularly overwhelmed, perhaps it's time to channel your energy and place it into your boxing class.

Let the punching bag be your outlet.

Which is the Best Type of Boxing?

If you are taking boxing classes to release some stress, we cannot confidently state that one type of boxing is inherently better than another. The boxing discipline that you choose to get involved in is a matter of personal preference.  However, it wouldn't hurt to get a taste of all the types of boxing classes available before you make up your mind. All of our Superprof tutors offer a free first class, so you can get a taste of what each type of boxing class entails before you make up your mind.

Which are the best types of boxing to relax?
While actual matches are far from relaxing, boxing itself is a great way to unwind. (Source: Skitterphoto)

We can promise that all types of boxing are intense, teach you discipline, and respect whilst still allowing you to stay in shape.

  • Traditional boxing which entails merely punches can increase your stamina and keep you persevering.
  • Savate enables you to combine kicks and punches so it is a form of boxing to get into if you want to release the most steam
  • Thai boxing entails using the most force by allowing you to rope in your elbows and knees too. You need to avoid attacks while causing attacks and if you want to be fully distracted this is the type of boxing that is best for you.
  • Kickboxing is believed to be favoured by most women. While kicking allows you to unwind, becoming an expert kickboxing champion means no stress only bliss. You don't realise how much concentration and strength are needed for kickboxing and if you are in need of something else to concentrate on, surely this is your best bet.

It may sound overly overwhelming reading about all the different boxing styles and trying to stand tall as a beginner boxer but the truth is by taking boxing classes you can get the confidence that you need, as well as the training to advance from a beginner boxer to a novice one in no time. No need to be scared about getting into the boxing ring, you generally start off with a punching bag first then you move on to ring work with an opponent (once you are fully ready).

Boxing to Relieve Stress

Another Type of Boxing: Cardio Boxing

Does boxing have to mean throwing a punch or two?

Cardio boxing draws inspiration from kickboxing and Thai boxing. Cardio boxing entails movements from combat sport that will get your heart pumping.

What is cardio boxing?

Cardio boxing doesn't require you to have an opponent but requires you to do aerobic movements. Cardio boxing, just like aerobic lessons, uses background music to make the class more entertaining.  Most people join cardio boxing classes as through these classes, these people tend to burn about 600 calories. These cardio boxing classes have entertainment value but are also a great way for you to release some stress.

Cardio boxing classes are a great place to put all your excess energy. It is also a sport that may enhance your self-confidence.  If you are worried that you are just a beginner boxer, you need not worry as you need no boxing experience to get rid of stress.

Cardio boxing doesn't require you to invest in any of the necessary boxing equipment needed by other types of boxing classes.

Cardio boxing is also a way to:

  • Lose weight
  • Tone your muscles
  • Reduce your stress levels
  • Work on your reflexes
  • Become more flexible
  • Build self-confidence

Have you tried punching the air? If you have, you will understand just how calming punching the air can be.

Tips on Boxing: To Gain The Full Health Benefits of Boxing

Whether you are taking boxing classes from your home, or you are at the gym, you want to reap the full health benefit from these classes.

Whatever type of boxing you choose to pursue, you need the right equipment to ensure that you are reaping the full benefit of stress relief.

The Equipment

First, invest in a punching bag. Beating  a punching bag improves your strength and speed. Punching bags allow you to work on your footwork. This is important because, in Thai boxing and kickboxing, you cannot wear any footwear.  However, to save yourself from injury, purchase some shin guards.

Exercises

Another tip to gain the full benefit of boxing classes is to make sure that you work out on your own as well.

To reap the full health benefit from your boxing classes, you need to ensure that your speed and power are increasing over time. Remember to keep breathing after every punch and kick.

The idea is to increase your speed and power over time and the efficiency of your attacks. Always breathe out as you strike and breathe in between attacks since your body functions far better with oxygen. Your arms must move in conjunction with the rest of your body. If not, your punches won’t be as powerful. You want to make sure that your whole body moves in unison.

You can watch many YouTube videos on power workouts to improve the way that you work out.

Eventually, you will learn that in boxing, there are three axes:

  •  the neutral axis,
  • the forward axis (with your weight on your front foot),
  • and the backward axis (with your weight on the back foot.

The axis always needs to correspond with your punching rotation.  While these tips will help, it is always best to rope in a boxing professional to teach you more tips and tricks.

Boxing Lessons Near Me

Since you are keen on taking up boxing lessons, perhaps do so with an experienced tutor from the Superprof website.  With Superprof tutors, you have the option of taking group tutorials, face-to-face tutorials, or private online tutorials.

Group tutorials are cheaper but you must remember with group tutorials the tutor can't give you his or her undivided attention. You have to work at the pace of the group.

Face-to-face tutorials take place with a private tutor who is like the bespoke tailor, someone who can tailor-make lessons to suit your goals.  These lessons tend to cost more per hour yet they are best if you enjoy learning at your own pace.

Are you keen on learning from your home in your own time? Well, you can now enjoy online private tutorials via video conferencing software.  With a decent internet connection, you can reap the full benefit of private online lessons. These online lessons are usually cheaper than private face-to-face lessons. Many Superprof tutors offer their first lesson for free. While this hour-long lesson won't be a proper session, it's the right chance for you to get to know your potential private tutor and to see if you enjoy the boxing tutor's teaching style.
