“Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face.” - Mike Tyson

Nobody wants to be punched in the face. However, we somehow enjoy when it happens to boxers. Boxing, you can tell, is a sport that requires you to use every single muscle in your body. It was the Olympic Games in 2012 that caused the number of boxing clubs to increase and made more and more people take an interest in boxing.

The idea behind boxing has been changing and many people are seeing it for what it really is: much more than a violent sport. In fact, boxing has come to be known as a sport that teaches discipline and respect to young men while simultaneously teaching them to fight.

Let's look at what you need to do if you have taken an interest in boxing.

Learn to Box: What Type of Boxing Should You Start With?

Before you even decide to take up boxing, you need to consider how to go about choosing a combat sport.

Boxing is not just about wearing a pair of boxing gloves and competing in the Olympic games. Have you ever heard of kickboxing or Thai boxing?

When choosing to take boxing classes, always keep your personal goals in mind. If you prefer kickboxing, there is no reason why you shouldn't learn it.

There are many personal reasons why people choose to take boxing classes. Their motivations could include: to tone up, lose weight, and build self-confidence.

Irrespective of what type of boxing classes you end up taking, your boxing instructor will inform you of the 4 boxing styles that are always used when describing boxers.

These styles include:

  • Swarmer
  • Out-boxer
  • Slugger
  • Boxer-puncher

With celebrities like Gigi Hadid taking boxing classes, you may be wondering how exactly you can get started too. Truth be told, you are not put in a boxing ring and forced to fight from the very onset.

You will start off by doing some kind of warm-up. Perhaps even a floor workout as a mandatory pre-boxing warm-up. Thereafter you will make your way into the boxing ring and start with ring work. You will end off practising with a punching bag.

You won't be made to box against a partner until you can confidently do so.

If you choose to take up Thai boxing, which is particularly known as being the most violent type of boxing, you will do warm-ups such as burpees, squats, and even push-ups.

If you are wondering how Muay Thai or Thai boxing is different from traditional boxing, the main difference lies in the way that the boxers defend themselves. Thai boxers use their arms and shins when defending themselves.

Learn Boxing for Self-Defence?

Speaking of defending yourself, many South Africans take up boxing classes for self-defence reasons.

You will see when you do partner work that boxing is not about throwing free punches but rather about learning ways to defend yourself. Techniques like bobbing-and-weaving and slipping can be rather easily learnt.

Should you find yourself in a fix, knowing how to defend yourself can surely help you get out of that situation. This is especially important in a country like South Africa where crime is rife.

Did you know that you can take private boxing classes with one of our Superprof tutors?

"Life is going to beat you up. It wouldn't be fair if you didn't throw some punches back at it."  Bradley Bowman

Oh well, if you never get the opportunity to use boxing to defend yourself, you can surely still use the boxing bag to take out your aggression in a controlled environment. Boxing does relieve stress too!

Boxing is a physical activity that allows you to work on your reflexes. Boxing is clearly a way to throw out some powerful blows while avoiding many powerful blows as well. By using the blocking technique that you have learnt from boxing classes, you can avoid conflict rather than get stuck in a fight.

Again, one of the core values that you will pick up from taking boxing classes is that of respect. Respect for your body is gained through boxing classes as well.  You will respect yourself enough to know that if you are not in the boxing rink with the right protective equipment, you should rather avoid challenging anyone as this may injure your knuckles.

While more women in South Africa are taking up boxing classes to defend themselves, there is no reason why men cannot take up boxing classes to learn how to defend themselves either.

A boxing instructor is someone who is firm and who exudes respect. When taking boxing lessons, the right instructor will help you to understand that:

  • Your position is everything, you need to stand correctly
  • You must be flexible enough to avoid getting attacked (the pre-boxing workouts were good for something)
  • You need to make sure to breathe after every punch
  • You need to be on alert always
  • You must always maintain eye contact with your opponent when in the boxing ring

If you want to work at boxing from home, invest in a punching bag.

Staying in shape is a sure possibility when you take up boxing classes. It is also a great way to lose weight as well as deal with stress.

How does boxing get rid of stress?

Try punching a punching bag and you will see exactly how boxing leads to decreased stress.

Boxing Classes for Weight Loss

Are you struggling with weight issues?

Well, by taking boxing classes, you can certainly lose weight too. So, whilst learning how to defend yourself, you lose weight at the same time? Isn't that the cherry on top?

Exactly how does weight loss happen through learning boxing?

As you box, fat gets converted into muscle. With bowing, your muscle mass index will increase, and you will also lose quite a bit of fat. What that means for your body is that you will appear to be more toned with an in-shape body.

Boxing is a way to break out into a sweat and build muscle tone.

Boxing does make use of every muscle in one's body and you can be assured that you will lose centimetres should you take on the right amount of boxing classes per week.

A 90-minute boxing class will burn about 1 000 calories but you need to make sure that you do at least two or three boxing classes per week to ensure you burn quite a bit of calories for the week.

Where do you find someone with whom you can take these lessons if you cannot make the boxing class times that are offered at your local gym?
