How Well Do You Know the World?

A geography quiz can reveal some fascinating gaps in our knowledge because capitals don't always correspond with the cities we hear about most often.

Australia is a classic example: Sydney may be the country's most recognisable city, but Canberra is the capital. Turkey can pose a similar problem, with many people choosing Istanbul over Ankara.

Brazil adds another curveball. Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo may be internationally famous, but Brasília is the country's capital. Suddenly, remembering capitals becomes rather more challenging than it first appears!

When the Capital isn't the City You Expect

One reason capitals can be tricky is that countries sometimes choose locations for political, historical or practical reasons rather than simply selecting their largest city. Some capitals have even changed over time as nations have developed. Myanmar, for example, moved its capital from Yangon to Naypyidaw in 2006. And then there's our own fascinating situation in South Africa. Rather than having one capital, we have three!

⚖️ Bloemfontein, Judicial capital
🇿🇦 Pretoria, Executive capital

Capitals can also give us clues about a country's history and character. Some are ancient centres of power, while others were deliberately planned to create a new administrative hub. Learning them can therefore be more than a memory exercise: each name can open a door to a different culture, landscape and story. Once you start connecting cities with countries, flags, landmarks and historical events, the world map becomes much easier to picture in your mind.

A Little Competition Never Hurts

This country quiz is not about being a walking atlas. It's about seeing what you remember, recognising patterns and perhaps learning a few facts you can impress your friends with later. You might know the capitals of countries you've visited, remember them from school, or have picked them up through films, music, news, sport and travel.

Listen: This famous one-hit-wonder describes the capital city of which country?

You may even find that the answers you feel least certain about are the ones you remember most clearly afterwards. Geography becomes much more fun when there's a little competition involved.

Ready to Put Your World Knowledge to the Test?

Think you can name the country quiz answers without hesitation? Now's your chance to find out! Challenge yourself to recognise capitals from across the globe, watch out for those deliberately tricky ones and see how your score compares with your friends or fellow learners.

Geography is the subject which holds the key to our future.

Whether you're a confident traveller, a geography enthusiast or someone who simply enjoys a good general knowledge challenge, there is plenty here to keep you guessing. And don't worry if you get a few wrong: every surprising answer is another piece of world knowledge to add to your mental map.
