Dance is considered a natural form of self-expression and has several benefits for children, where the body expresses itself naturally and enhances their personality and confidence. Music is an important component of this self-expression, the rhythms and sounds oftentimes guide our body movement, releasing a bouquet of emotions and inspiration.

When choosing dancing classes for your children, it can vary depending on the dancing style you think they would enjoy the most and achieve their maximum potential of self-expression. However, the technique is also essential when dancing, it helps to avoid injuries but also to feel more harmonious with our body during the different movements.

Introductory Classes to Find Your Child’s Preference

It can be challenging to find extracurricular activities for your child. It requires you to know your child interests and abilities but also to know which activity might be suitable for their age, then finding a good teacher and school is also part of the challenge.

If you already know that your child enjoys dancing, and is inclined to activities that allow artistic development and physical activity, dance is a great discipline that combines those two aspects.

Dance is a diverse discipline from classical dance, hip-hop, modern jazz, flamenco or Zumba and more, there are plenty of styles to choose from.

Then, how should you pick?

The best way to keep your child interested in the discipline is to let him decide and experience the different dances. A good way is to try different music styles and dance along with them, and ask them which one they enjoy the most. When introducing a new discipline to your child, it is important for them to actively say they want to do it and decide they want to do it.

Otherwise, forcing your child to do an activity he does not enjoy, or does not want to do, can have negative effects on his well-being and confidence. Any extracurricular activity should do the exact opposite, so keep this in mind as you suggest them the activity.

Another way to introduce them to dance is finding trial classes to help them discover the different dances and class environments they enjoy the most. Sometimes a few hours of discovering a new style might be all they need. Also, consider that this might take time and that the first few trials might not be successful, but once your child, and you find what is a good fit, it will be very rewarding.

Dance classes are available for children that are old enough for primary school, by this age they have a good understanding of their own body and can follow an entire class for at least an hour. If you want to start earlier, you might want to consider private lessons or ask your local dance studio.

Introductions to Dance: the earlier, the better

When starting dance classes, like many other disciplines, it is best to start at an early age. The goal of starting these dance classes is to introduce children to dancing by helping them to understand how their body moves around a given space. These dance exercises teach your child how to listen to their body, how to move their body in time to music and express themselves.

The ultimate goal of the introductory dancing classes is to learn how to use their body and channel their energy while improving their sense of rhythm and balance.

During the classes, they will also learn to listen to a teacher, stay concentrated and pay attention to their peers. Thus, dance is not only about moving your body, it is about focus, empathy and about music. Children can learn about music in general during their classes and discover different musical instruments, and music styles. These foundations will help them develop their creativity and artistic senses.

These elements are key to building the foundations for becoming a professional dancer in the future.

Follow the steps of their idols with Modern Jazz

Modern Jazz is among the most popular dance classes since the 2000s if your child or teenager wants to dance like their favourite K-pop star. Students and teenagers love to learn how to do dynamic routines that resemble the ones their favourite artists do, but also to create their ultimate TikTok trend.

Dance classes that focus on Modern Jazz are more open to improvisation and creativity. When dancing in smaller groups, students will choose a song with their teacher and create routines that have certain rhythms that will allow them to apply moves they have previously learned in class.

Students that these styles of dance classes usually have already a good level and often move into urban, hip-hop dance classes, which are more demanding in terms of technique.

If your child wants to improve his style beyond the dance classes, they can always find a tutor that will help them improve the techniques that are more difficult to learn in groups.

What about Classical Ballet?

When we think about dancing classes, we tend to first think of classical ballet. The reason is that classical ballet is very demanding, and it is recommended to start at a young age to avoid frustrations when your children are older.

Classical ballet is also much easier to learn at a young age because it is a very technical dance that requires flexibility and strength. This can only be built up from a younger age, it is very difficult for late starters to learn classical dance when they reach 14 years old. Thus, if you know this is the style that your child wants and enjoys, it is recommended to start as early as possible.

Other Original Dance Styles

As mentioned earlier, dance is a rich and diverse discipline, every culture has a form of self-expression that takes place through original dances and music. There are plenty of dance schools and dance associations that offer less common dance styles. Your child might be into African Dance or Tap and you don't know it yet!

African Dance

African Dance is a full-body experience, with lots of movements that engage the whole body, it is great for energetic children. It is also a great opportunity for your child to enjoy percussion and learn about a different culture and understand the history of each African Dance.

Capoeira

Capoeira is a Brazilian style that mixes dancing and martial arts, which is great for developing balance, flexibility and strength. In Capoeira, dancers “face-off” against one another in percussive rhythmic combat in which they never actually strike each other. It’s really impressive!

Irish Dancing

Irish dancing requires being in a very good physical shape and a lot of concentration. If you think your child can take the challenge, give it a try, you both might be surprised.

Tap

Tap dancing is fun and catchy because it mixes up percussion and sometimes even acting! This might be a great dance for a kid that loves a different type of artistic expression!

Where to find a dance class?

You can find dance classes at a dance school or company, sometimes they are even part of the curriculum of your children school, or find a Superprof tutor that can arrange private lessons for your children all around the United Kingdom.

There are numerous talented and experienced dance tutors on Superprof offering face-to-face tutorials, online classes or group tutorials. Each type of tutorial has its pros and cons, that's where you will have to decide what is best suited for you and your child regarding learning style and budget.

Each learning method represents pros and cons, a one-on-one class might be the most cost-effective but also tend to be the most expensive per hour.

Online tutorials are more affordable, but the teacher might be limited if the children have difficulty staying focused.

The group tutorials are usually the cheapest options, but also allows forming groups and a social dynamic that is also good for the children when learning a new discipline. The only con is that the teacher can not dedicate as much one-on-one time for all the students as in a private lesson.

Considering all this information and knowing the needs of your child, you can find a Superprof tutor that adapts to all your criteria. Remember that the first class is for free, and this allows you to look for the teacher that best adapts to your child and their needs.
