Benefits of Teaching Kids Chinese in South Africa

Every time your child colours in a Chinese character or sings along to a Mandarin phrase, their brain is being gently exercised, enhancing memory, attention, and flexible thinking. Learning Mandarin also will help to nurture perseverance because getting to grips with tones and unfamiliar characters introduces a valuable mindset of patience, resilience and discovery.

Beyond the intellectual growth, learning Mandarin will open doors to understanding the rich Chinese culture. South Africa enjoys a growing relationship with China, through trade, education and community ties, especially in large cities such as Johannesburg, Pretoria and Cape Town. Familiarity with Mandarin can therefore be a pathway to meaningful cultural exchange or future career possibilities in diplomacy, tourism, business or academia.

Tips for Bringing Mandarin to Life at Home

Imagine sitting together with your child, exploring a charming Mandarin children’s storybook full of colourful illustrations and simple characters. Even if Mandarin isn’t your first language, you can pronounce words aloud together, giggle over how unfamiliar certain sounds are, and delight in small triumphs like recognising a character. That shared experience is pure magic.

You could also help them learn Mandarin in creative ways, like:

  • painting hanzi (hàn zì, the Mandarin characters)
  • making paper lanterns, which play a significant role in Chinese culture
  • making a popular Chinese dish, like dumplings, and using a few Mandarin words like bao (包 for dumpling) or zhong (种 for middle) during the process to enhance vocabulary and memory through tactile learning.

Resources for Learning Mandarin in South Africa

Despite the thousands of kilometres that separate South Africa and China, there are accessible, quality ways to support your child’s Mandarin learning at home. These resources exist both in person and online:

The Chinese Culture and International Education Exchange Centre (CCIEEC) in Midrand, Johannesburg, offers engaging Mandarin classes for children, whether in groups or private lessons, and welcomes learners of all ages and abilities. They also support preparations for the Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi (HSK) exams, China's official test of Chinese language proficiency for non-native speakers of the language.

Online tutoring platforms, like Superprof, can connect you with private Mandarin tutors around the country. Superprof hosts the adverts of thousands of tutors, based in South Africa and abroad, who charge an average of R344 per hour. Many of Superprof's Mandarin teachers offer the first, introductory class free.
Using apps and online tools like, HelloChinese or ChineseSkill provide fun, gamified lessons which children respond wonderfully to.

Creating a Chinese Language Learning Environment at Home

Rather than setting rigid schedules, creating a gentle rhythm of daily exposure can be very effective.

Singing a two-minute song in the morning while helping your child get dressed, browsing a picture book before supper, or watching a short Chinese cartoon before bedtime, these are all little touches that have an impact.

When your child recognises a hanzi character, repeats a phrase correctly or shows delight in their progress, it will boost their confidence.

Remember, every hum, giggle, scribbled Mandarin character, and repeated phrase are all part of the language-learning journey.

Teaching kids Chinese may come with its own set of challenges and frustrations. However, with the right approach and mindset, these can be overcome.

Below are some tips for tackling commonly encountered challenges:

  • Lack of confidence: Encourage your child to embrace mistakes as part of the learning process. Create a supportive and non-judgmental environment where they feel comfortable practising their Chinese language skills and making mistakes as they go.
