What is the Solar System?

Our solar system is made up of eight planets, dwarf planets like Pluto, countless moons, and millions of asteroids and comets, all of which orbit the Sun in a delicate gravitational balance. Not only that, each planet has its own unique characteristics, from the storms of Jupiter to the rings of Saturn and the dusty red surface of Mars. Scientists continue to explore these worlds using telescopes and space missions, uncovering new insights every year.

In South Africa, astronomy holds a special place. Facilities like the Southern African Large Telescope in Sutherland and the Square Kilometre Array project highlight the country’s role in global space research. This makes learning about space not only exciting but also locally relevant because it connects you to real scientific work happening right here.

Jupiter is so large that all the other planets could fit inside it
A day on Venus is longer than a year on Venus
South Africa hosts one of the world’s most powerful radio telescopes
Saturn could float in water because it is mostly made of gas
The Sun contains about 99.8% of all the mass in our solar system
Mars has the tallest volcano in the solar system, Olympus Mons
Neptune has the fastest winds recorded, reaching over 2,000 km per hour
