What Can I Expect From a Life Coach?

A life coach will interview you and help you identify your strengths and weaknesses, skills and interests. They will then set you on a path to maximise the benefits that you can gain from these elements and from any other talents which are latent within you. They will help you push past self-imposed barriers and help you weigh up the consequences of various actions. They will, however, never tell you what to do!

Know What You Expect from Life Coaching

Have very clear in your mind what you want your coach to help you with. Is it your intention to enhance your CV, find love, attain a work objective or achieve a health goal? Check out life coaching online to find out more about what coaching can do for you. Once you have made up your mind, you will make the task of your coach so much easier.

Do Some Introspection

Prior to your session to clarify your objectives, do some self-examination. Jot down your responses to these questions to set you on the right path:

  • What is it that you enjoy doing?
  • What are you innately good at?
  • What do others say that you are good at?
  • In life, what is of greatest importance to you?
  • What are the things that motivate you every day?

Open Yourself up to All Possibilities

By engaging with a life coach, you are opening yourself up to a new world with untold possibilities. It is important to not cling to “baggage’ (old fears and anxieties). Open yourself up and you could see your life change in so many ways that you never before thought possible. Also, consider your coach’s advice seriously. He or she may want you to attempt things that are strange and challenging to you. This may ask a lot of you, but you’ll find it worth it in your pursuit of your goals.

You will never be forced to attempt anything that your coach doesn’t feel you are not capable of doing. The sessions that you’ll engage in are confidential and will help you explore your values, beliefs, thoughts and opinions.

When you participate in your early life coaching sessions, you must already be motivated to work with your coach and truthfully share your future aspirations. Once your coach has a good understanding of where you’re coming from, he or she will navigate a course which is affirming and directed at bringing about beneficial internal changes.

Techniques and Processes

Each coaching session will be somewhat different. Each one is dependent on what methods your coach employs and what stage your coaching is at. Your relationship with your coach will also change as time passes, as will the techniques employed - adapting and developing according to your needs, responses and the stage at which your coaching is.

Good coaching will also be responsive to your needs and will grow and be shaped by them.

As your coaching sessions continue, the factors which are retarding your progress towards your goals will be identified. Your coach will skilfully aid you navigate a path which will help you overcome or bypass any emotional or mental blocks.

What should be the outcome of your life coaching sessions? These sessions should leave you excited and with a sense of purpose and clear direction. They must clear away the fog caused by any feelings of uncertainty and helplessness. They must leave you energised and confident to move ahead to your desired outcomes.

A great point to reach, is one where you have set realistic goals for yourself and have been able to take appropriate steps along your new course towards your preferred destination. The fact that you’ve decided on a new course, will already leave you feel re-energised and empowered!

Knowing that you have a professional coach by your side, will make the task of making these tough decisions easier, as he or she will always be there supporting, guiding and advising you. While making these changes can be challenging and thrilling at the same time, having a clear vision will bring about a greater sense of calm and control to your life, which will be a now no longer be a ‘daily grind’. One thing you will know if sure, is that you time and money have been well spent!

What Will My Relationship with My Life Coach be Like?

Just like your interaction with a new teacher or lecturer, you will not immediately know what your relationship will be like by the end of your first class. Some people will already be able to say things like, “I like him,” or not. That won’t be everyone’s experience. Your coach’s intention will not, necessarily, get you to like him or her, but to get you to trust them, as they will constantly be challenging you, without telling you what to do. Your coach will ask probing questions which are ultimately designed to get you to make your own decisions. Going forward, your coach will hold you accountable for the decisions you have taken and the goals that you’ve set.

Comparable to a friend, facilitator, advocate or consultant, a life coach is, however, someone whose point of departure is totally different. A life coach is there to empower you to take action!

This relationship will fail if you think that your coach has to be a friend who will act like your personal cheer-leader, or a consultant who will provide you with all the information and answers you require. This is not that kind of relationship. Their function is to help you taste success and, so, they will push you outside of your comfort-zone.

Your coach will challenge you to revisit your perspective on issues and keep you on track, regardless of setbacks.

Again, those will be challenges to learn from and to overcome! Also, your coach is not there to judge you, but has your success as their ultimate goal.

Central, to a life coach’s motivation, is the idea that he or she empowers people to help themselves! While not giving an opinion, offering advice or passing judgement, your life coach will guide you to an answer.

Generally, all life coaches should follow a number of basic principles:

  • Objectivity: we are all different and so will be our perspective on various things, so it’s always important for a coach to remain impartial and objective in their attempt to assist their client to become the best version of themselves.
  • Empowerment: everyone has the capacity to modify or realign their perspective on things. Life coaching will provide you with skills (tools) to open yourself up to new ways of thinking, enabling you to reach your goals.
  • Guidance: there is a clear distinction between an instructor and a guide. An instructor instructs. They tell you exactly what you should do. A guide, on the other hand, offers support and the tools required for a person to do the job for him- or herself. As a guide, you coach will never tell you what to do.
