What is a Good Camera for Videography?

One of the wonders of new technology is the ability to combine various tasks into one device. Take smartphones which can record video, take high-quality images, record voice notes and do your banking all in one.

So, while we needed camcorders 20 years ago to get the types of shots in videography we needed, today the best cameras for videography can range from high-end videography cameras to digital SLRs and smartphones.

As a start, amateur filmmakers and photographers do well to choose a device that offers versatility.

Having the ability to switch between videography and photography is a reality these days that was once only a dream of the past.

It all depends on the types of shots you are hoping to achieve.

Shooting with a smartphone or DSLR will not be the best option for videography if you are shooting cinema quality, however, in Full HD, they will work for YouTube.

One advantage of using today’s DSLR cameras over traditional videography cameras is that you can achieve depth of field which is when an area of a shot is in focus and the background is blurry. This can really create a professional look as well as create mood.

This technique is hard to achieve with travelling or moving shots as remember that cameras are designed primarily with still photography in mind. Autofocus does not work well with movement and can be difficult to achieve manually for beginners.

Another challenge when it comes to DSLRs versus exclusively videography cameras is achieving good sound with the built-in microphone. It is recommended to rather invest in an external microphone instead.

What Makes a Good Camera for Videography?

When it comes to choosing a good camera for videography there are no hard and fast rules. Every user should work out what their unique needs are before determining the camera they need for their style of videography.  For some people achieving good slow-motion footage might be important while others may never use that functionality.

Make sure you take your type of shots in videography into account.

One tip that applies to both photography and videography is that in many cases the quality of the lens you are using is more important than necessarily having the most expensive camera body. In the same way, remember that the larger the sensor in your camera body, the better the quality of your image will be.

These days the best cameras for videography will film in 4k which is hard to beat. Having said that, you may only need full HD depending on the types of shots in videography you are trying to achieve.

The Best Videography Cameras

Panasonic, Fujifilm, Sony and Canon are all at the top of the list when it comes to recommending a good camera for videography. All shoot in 4k, offer good image stability and can create clear footage. Having said this, remember that new and improved products are being released all the time.

Fujifilm X-H1

This Fujifilm camera is an excellent choice thanks to its value for money. It is not a single-reflex lens (SLR) camera but a hybrid. It does not have a full-frame sensor but rather an APS-C sensor. Its ISO range from 200 to 12 800 is impressive though. Remember that even though a high ISO can help in low light conditions, it can also result in noise if it is set too high.

The Fujifilm X-H1 photo modes offer 24.3 megapixels while video modes can film at 24, 25 or 30 frames per second.

Sony Alpha 7

When it comes to achieving the types of shots in videography that impress, the Sony Alpha 7 has become a big competitor. This hybrid camera has been celebrated by the videography community for its full-frame sensor, high image quality and small, easy-to-handle camera body.

Even though it is a contender for the best camera for videography, newer models such as the Sony Alpha 7R III have since been added to the range.

Another reason why it is on the list of the best camera for videography is because its ISO range, which goes up to 30 000 is even better than Fuji’s. Of course, the 4k footage makes it a more expensive option. In fact, it is quite an investment, especially for a beginner.

Panasonic Lumix GH5S

The reason that the Panasonic Lumix GH55 makes it onto the best camera for videography list is that it is a camera that has been designed with video before photography in mind. Filming can be done at 24, 25, 30, 50, 60. This camera is designed with video in mind and is really for those wanting to shoot video first and foremost and take a few photos on the side. You can film at 60, 50, 30, 25, and 24 frames per second.

This camera also offers different shooting modes and its ISO range which goes up to 50,000 makes up for the smaller sensor. It is unfortunate that there is a lack of stabilisation integrated in the body.

Olympus OM-D E-M1

If you are looking for the best videography camera, Olympus cameras are famed for their comfort and the quality of the video they capture. As hybrid cameras, this range comes with a Micro Four Thirds (MFT) sensor and ISO up to 25, 600. The 4K video can be shot at 24, 25 or 30 frames per second.

If you want the best camera for videography but if your budget is limited, remember to look at second-hand models too.

Nikon D850

While the Nikon D850 has video functionality, it is also an excellent option for those whose primary focus is on photography

It too, is a more expensive option.

This camera which shoots at 4K can shoot up to 50 frames per second. It is an excellent compact camera that has brilliant video quality too.

In addition, the Sony models RX100 II, III, or IV have even more options than the original model.

Canon G7X Mark III

Slightly more expensive than the Sony, you’ll find that the Canon G7 Mark III with its smaller body can also film in 4K. At around £700, it is really for those who are still passionate about photography and film but do not want to lug around a bigger camera.

To learn more about film and photography consider a private tutor from Superprof to help you. You will find many options when it comes to budgets and styles of learning.

In-person tutorials are costly but of course, the most effective. Tutorials can be tailored to your unique needs, goals and learning style.

Finally, there are also group tutorials which can be more affordable when the tutor’s costs are shared amongst all the students. The downside, of course, is that lessons are not personalised to the individual and students do not get the same amount of one-on-one time with the tutor.

The choice is yours!
