About James
I'm a professional violin, viola, cello and piano teacher with experience both teaching and performing a broad range of genres, and occasionally writing my own arrangements and original compositions.
I make a point of my students taking responsibility for their own learning, and ensuring they come prepared for each lesson. Many of my students (both past and present) have expressed their surprise at how well I can break techniques down into smaller steps and keep each student inspired to constantly do the best they can.

I have experience teaching both classical and contemporary violin, viola and piano utilising a range of methodologies and repertoire depending on each students' needs and goals. I also have experience preparing students for AMEB, ABRSM and Trinity exams, and teach the relevant music theory and musicianship skills alongside the students choice of instrument, depending on what their goals are.
My own performance experience includes (though certainly not limited to):
- Touring internationally with the Royal Melbourne Philharmonic Orchestra.
- Held the position of Concertmaster for a season of Hairspray
- Played 1st violin for season of Phantom of the Opera
- Being 2nd violin Section Leader for the Victorian Concert Orchestra for 10 years.
- Playing both violin and viola casually with the Australasian Orchestra.
Minimum recommended lesson lengths are:
- 30 minutes (beginners)
- 45 minutes (intermediate)
- 60 minutes (advanced)
I have experience teaching most age groups with my youngest student being 4 years old and my oldest being in their 60's!
