About Mary Kate
Hi! I’m MK :) I am a practicing painter and illustrator. I received my B.F.A. from the Tyler School of Art in 2021 where I studied Graphic and Interactive Design with a concentration in Illustration. I have since worked as a Graphic Designer, both freelance and professionally, as well as a part-time painter. For the past 5 years, I have been running my own Etsy business where I sell prints of illustrated maps and totes. I also have been painting acrylic pet portraits (about 90 to date). I am currently a full-time freelancer in both painting and graphic design work. I am very passionate about the importance of artists sticking to their craft in whatever ways they can. I understand that there are times where art takes the back burner due to personal reasons, financial reasons, or just lack of motivation entirely. I hope to inspire you to create in whatever ways tailor to your life. If that means one Sunday afternoon a month with a glass of wine and your coziest slippers, or a couple times a week in your makeshift studio. I am here to gladly guide you along in finding confidence in your self-expression.

HELP STUDENTS FIND THEIR VOICE/STYLE
I don’t believe there is a “right” way to create. So long as you are listening to your inner voice and are committed to the materials and canvas in front of you, you are ready to go. However, I understand it takes confidence to get to that point and in order to build confidence as an artist, understanding proper techniques and practices helps a bunch. So, I am here to help build your confidence as an artist so that you can unleash your voice!!
As your tutor, I will assess your current skill level through light warm up pieces, get a solid understanding of what you hope to achieve as an artist, and guide you along this artistic endeavor to grow your confidence so you can create freely, without the fear of interruption from that little voice inside your head that says “you’re not doing this right” or “they do it so much better than me”. Art is so important!! Let’s keep it that way :)
