About Ryan

I have studied Spanish for around 7 years now. I started back in high school and continued with my studies throughout my time as an undergraduate student. I worked as a tutor, both in-person and online, at my university tutoring a variety of different subjects; but primarily Spanish.

Afterwards, I decided to further my studies even more by continuing my Spanish studies in graduate school. In graduate school, I also worked as a graduate assistant where I attended my graduate classes while at the same time worked as a professor at my home university teaching Spanish to students where I was taught skills in pedagogy and lesson creation. I always strive to continue to improve so I have also studied in Barcelona to better improve my fluency.

About the lesson

My methods in teaching Spanish are about immersion. I focus on primarily speaking to the learner in the target language while trying to avoid speaking English unless absolutely necessary. Throughout the lessons, I expect that the learner also do the same as to help retain what they learn. Despite the learner not knowing the language yet, I see that the best way to learn a new language is to try to avoid using English as a constant crutch. It is difficult at first, but with practice and patience, I see it as truly the best way to learn!

A typical lesson plan with me consists of speaking and writing practice. I first introduce a topic and relate it to what the student already knows in their daily life through different types of examples. Afterwards, I create a variety of different activities for the student to practice their comprehension of the topic which would include writing and speaking. I start off with easy activities, such as practicing conjugations one word at a time. Afterwards, the activities would become more challenging, such as using the words in full sentences or speaking sentences to me while using what they learned. At the end of the lesson, I run a review over everything the student had learned with me during that lesson and combine it all into one final writing activity to test if they can implement what they learned by themselves.

These lessons are best suited for students who are at a beginner or intermediate level of Spanish. My lessons have previously been used for college-level students who were studying in the field of humanities, but they can also be applied to anyone interested learning Spanish.
