About Charles

My experience in the classroom has given me a unique perspective into the dynamics of the student's relationship to the topic. Usually, after the initial study of basic arithmetic the foundation of the understanding of a more sophisticated use of numbers is introduced. Students encounter two things at once. Their attention is becoming more and more distracted. The simple concepts seem to be easy to grasp but when the student attempts to put all of the information together many essential elements are either missing or not understood well.
In the learning of language one must learn the alphabet first but then, once the basic structure of the language is taught, the student must memorize a vocabulary of words that will ensure confidence in the ability to complete more complex ideas. There are more basic rules that must be learned to allow understanding of the mathematics that is taught later. The student must have confidence in the fundamentals as mathematics begins to be taught more as a language. The student has been learning the English language almost incidentally. Writing may be difficult, but with enough vocabulary, simple sentences can be used.
With mathematics, if the student has not grasped the concept of definition and the laws of manipulating expressions, problems arise. The student loses confidence and realizes that many of the fundamentals have been ignored. These fundamentals, usually the definition of multiplication and the basic factors of the numbers 1-9, were not memorized. Mathematics splits into geometry, trigonometry, algebra. Some subjects require the manipulation of expressions. Formulas are used in other subjects.
I believe that, when the student becomes comfortable with the basic information that has been ignored, confidence will be restored to allow the ability to begin to relate to mathematics as a language not a subject that has now become a problem.

The focus is on the application of mathematics in the lifestyle of the student. The knowledge of the student will be evaluated to discover what fundamental understanding is needed to be successful in all high school curricula.
Once the students need is established the tutor and student will together plan the lessons to decide upon the approach that is comfortable for the student. The tutor will give the student a realistic idea of how success in the study will be determined.
My experience in the educational system gives me the needed insight into the right approach to establish for each individual student. My use of mathematics and its application in engineering and business will help to determine the fundamental knowledge that may be missing from the student's learning experience. This will help the student to gain the confidence needed to be successful with the study.
