About Joel
I am a Ph.D. candidate in the history department at Ohio State University. I also have a M.A. in Greek and Latin. My research specializes in the Medieval Eastern Mediterranean, but I am knowledgeable about most of human history. I also have experience in Greek Archaeology.
While I have not tutored before, I have taught several courses at the college level with student counts ranging from 12-45 students. These include Latin and Greek Terminology, Ancient Greek Language, Classical Mythology, Roman Civilization, History of the Crusades, and Medieval History.

My goal when teaching history is to teach my students how to ask their own questions about what happened in the past. I also want my students to come out of the class with the tools needed to evaluate other people's use of historical evidence.
I put a large emphasis on research methodology. I ask my students to actively research a topic of their own choice, and give them the help needed to do so. I find that this approach both increases student engagement, as they have some ownership of the project, and retention, as the project tends to be more memorable than rote assignments.
I am happy to teach any grade level. My experience is mostly with college level students, but the same basic approach of teaching research methodology and then helping a student pursue their own questions about the past will work at any grade level.
