About Ed
I have a BSc from Queen's University, and an MS and PhD from the University of British Columbia, all in mathematics. My doctorate is in harmonic analysis and number theory, but I also have extensive experience in algebra, analysis, analytic and algebraic geometry, model theory, and logic. I began working as a tutor in 2010 and have tutored scores of students across many demographics, from teenagers to adults, from essential arithmetic skills to Galois theory and beyond. As a university lecturer and high school instructor I have taught hundreds of students to an overwhelmingly positive reception. I have extensive experience with in-home and online tutoring, as well as with in-classroom and online lecturing. Finally, my greatest pride as a mathematics educator is the success of my students who, before working with me, thought themselves incapable or unskilled in mathematics. As an educator it is up to my students, not myself, to determine my efficacy, and it is only due to their continued success that I claim any skill for this role.

I strongly believe that the vast majority of issues students have with mathematics have to do with the fact that a given subject is usually presented in only one or two ways; however there are nearly as many learning styles in this world as there are students, so very often the way a subject is presented to us is not the manner in which we are best equipped to understand it.
I believe that the easiest way to build our mathematical understanding is to expand on that which we already have. Given that almost every student has at least one or two mathematical ideas they understand well, I find the most effective teaching method is to identify for each student what makes sense to them at that moment, and to use that as a launchpad for building up new ideas or concepts.
I have taught or tutored hundreds of students during my over 15 years of tutoring, and have yet to encounter a single one who is "without" mathematical aptitude: the effort a student must put in may be more or less, but the only truly required ability is the desire to understand.
I primarily tutor undergraduate mathematics, but also have experience tutoring high school and graduate mathematics. Lesson plans are highly individualized; the main commonality is that the first session typically begins with identifying a student's strengths, goals, and uncertainties.
