About Ben
I am identified as a very positive and encouraging person. I particularly enjoy working with young people, helping them discern their own desires for their future as well as fulfill their academic potential. I have a spotless record of helping my tutees towards top grades.
Teaching Experience
I am a qualified teacher and was a secondary school biology teacher at St Paul’s School, London. I taught 8 biology classes to students aged 13-18, including GCSE, AS and A-level (OCR, Edexcel and iGCSE). I was an examiner for the Common Entrance exams as well as an academic facilitator for those students aiming for Oxbridge enrollment. My classroom teaching experience was further broadened by teaching GCSE science at Wembley High School on a short term placement. I then lectured and ran discussion groups on MSc courses at Imperial College (the Conservation Science and Environmental Technology masters) while I conducted my PhD. Most recently I coordinated and delivered the Outdoor Learning program at Ark Franklin Primary Academy in Kensal Rise, London.
Additionally to these official roles, I have been tutoring 11-18 year olds for the past 10 years, predominantly in biology. With this experience, I am happy to tutor a wide variety of subjects.
Additional Information
I have been volunteering at urban youth clubs and outward bound youth camps since I left school myself, setting up an inner city nature education charity in my early 30s. Nature inspires me and I try to spend as much time as possible in rural or wild environments, relaxing into a different rhythm which frees my mind to write children’s fairy tales; stories that I read to my nieces and nephews. These wild places also tempt me into plentiful, more thrilling activities such as surfing, rock climbing, x-country skiing, sailing and bush craft. Finally, I love all types of music but play and sing in a gospel & blues band, and practice on my beautiful sailing boat which I live on in Brighton Marina.

Recommendations

As a person, Ben has an infectious enthusiasm for life in general. Coupled with his excellent communication skills and ability to listen to others, Ben is a fantastic and engaging tutor/teacher. With his wide range of life experience and academic qualifications Ben is able to bring perspective, understanding and life to any subject, regardless of how dull it may initially seem. I do not know anyone more suited as a tutor than Ben.
I have known Ben for ten years - in that time I have come to know him as an extraordinary person with exceptional gifts.
He arrived at ST Paul's School as a graduate from Cambridge and started teaching biology to some very able A level students. I was impressed with how hard working he was and also how well his students responded to him. He devised complex schemes of work, had very good interpersonal skills, organised extra curricular activities and was a constant source of positivity.See more recommendations
