My background to teaching has been in the classroom and in small tutorial groups. I have engaged remotely using camera since leaving the teaching profession when a colleague and I do business meetings. At this lockdown time we will do our lessons remotely. Lessons are structured around what your needs are, be this literature, poetry, orals, writing or general language.
I taught English first language 1990 – 1998 in KZN. It was in my first year that I began to use music to teach poetry, and to introduce pupils to the tree folk, look for fairies and do out-of-the-ordinary things to make the subject interesting. One junior class spent a loooong morning hiding away in my classroom when we did the Dairy of Anne Frank. Probably the most outrageous thing was, through a friend in town, staging that the police arrest me in my classroom -- in front of a group of startled teenagers!
In 1999 I moved to Gauteng, where I played guitar on three projects before being given a National Arts Council grant to do presentations for schools. With the further help of churches (who printed worksheets), I would arrive at rural schools in KZN and, over the morning, cover the matric poetry syllabus. This was a high point in my teaching career.
I taught again from September 2000 – 2002 in an IEB school in Senderwood, before leaving to pursue a career in publishing. This was mostly as the editor of an agricultural publication, now the website (concealed information) During this time I have still been involved in teaching by assisting the children of friends with various school assignments, mainly preparation for exams.
Perfect! My experience with Craig was fantastic - he was patient, fun, and professional. He made the lesson easy to understanding and enjoyable, and his passion for the subject was contagious. I found myself feeling far more confident with the topic by the end and I would gladly have him as my exclusive tutor! He has a unique and creative take on the topic, so I would recommend him to everyone who wants to learn from a brand new perspective. Looking forward to all future lessons. Thanks for everything!
