During my BFA in Digital Art, I had experience with many tools and methods of art making. We started from the fundamentals of art, from learning about how colors work, shading, lighting, composition, and how to communicate well in critique. By my final year, we were working mostly conceptually, understanding how art communicates to viewers, keeping in mind historical contexts and psychology. The most important thing I learned was to have a balance between an attention to detail and an eye on the big picture.
I'd vary my methods of instruction based on the level of the student, and their intentions. If a student's first priority is to make something beautiful, then we will focus on honing the fundamentals of design. If a student wants to create evocative work, or tell a story, we will focus more on symbols, psychology, and historical contexts of art. I will assign projects based on the skills the student wants to develop, and suggest useful tools and references. We will develop good critique methods, practice being objective and concise. But in the end, the student should feel free and have fun through making art!
I've taught students in language and ESL for over 4 years. I've given art lessons to students for over 2 years. I've had 3 students I've tutored one-on-one, but have been a leader in art class discussions during university, and have led the art department in a student group. I'm now working with artists on a daily basis, and working freelance as an illustrator, designer, and videographer.
My students have left my lessons and critique with greater confidence, stronger ideas, a desire to learn more and challenge themselves, and to continue to grow and make compelling art.
rates do not vary, but student must supply their own materials.
