One of the most vital skills you can learn in life is how to swim. The harsh reality is that safe swimming is not just about fun or fitness; it’s about survival. Tragically, drowning remains one of the leading causes of accidental death, both in South Africa and across the world. Many drownings occur in places where water seems relatively harmless – the beach, lakes, swimming pools and even drinking water dams and tanks. Bear in mind that being a strong swimmer doesn't just mean knowing how to stay afloat; it means being prepared for various water conditions and knowing how to handle unexpected situations. Here, the beach is a prime example: while it’s tempting to swim in remote spots, always look for areas that are marked with safety signs and warnings. Rivers, lakes, and dams, though seemingly peaceful, can hide fast-moving currents and underwater hazards, so it’s important to swim in safe designated zones. If you’re at a public pool, does the pool look well-maintained? Observe whether the pool looks clean and note whether any rescue equipment or lifeguards are nearby.

Another important principle to keep in mind is to never swim alone, especially in open water. Swimming in pairs (or groups) helps keep everyone safe. In case of an emergency, having someone nearby who can call for help or assist with a rescue is wise.

As you can tell, the concept of water safety is about much more than knowing how to float or swimming perfect freestyle. Rather it includes everything from assessing water conditions and knowing how to react in an emergency.

Consider the major risk of a swimmer getting caught in rip currents -  powerful, fast-moving channels of water that pull swimmers away from shore. Rip currents can be deceptive because the water may seem calm in other parts of the beach. But if caught in one, your best course of action is to swim parallel to the shore, not directly against the current. Recognising these dangers and knowing how to act quickly is one of the most important elements of water safety.

In addition to understanding rip currents, it’s vital to learn about water depth and underwater hazards. Whether it’s shallow rocks, drop-offs, or debris, knowing how to identify these dangers before jumping in to enjoy the water can help to prevent accidents.

Another aspect of water safety is  being able to help others in trouble. Sadly, many drownings occur when a rescuer goes in without the necessary skills. If you see someone in distress, always alert a lifeguard or emergency services first, especially if the conditions are dangerous. If you decide to attempt a rescue, a good tip is to grab any sort of floatation, whether that is a life buoy, boogie board or surfboard to go with you.

For children, access to swimming lessons as early as possible can provide vital life-saving skills and peace of mind for parents. Teaching children how to safely enter and exit the water, how to float, and how to signal for help builds a strong foundation for future swimming.
