Exploring the Art of Poetry
Poetry is a beautiful art form that makes typical words in any given language sound like sweet honey.
Poetry is taught in schools across South Africa and many may have been inspired by the words of celebrated poets.
But, what are the technical aspects and characteristics of poetry?
What is the Structure of a Poem?
A poem must follow certain rules and standards.
The laws of writing are not there to restrict beginner poets but rather to ensure that they are staying true to the art form.
So, what is the structure of a poem?
Poems are composed of certain elements such as rhyme, verse, meter, scheme, and stanza.
Before students can begin dissecting works of poetry, they must understand these characteristics. Meters are the rhythmic structure and are dictated by the number of syllables. Rhyme involves the repetition of certain syllables.
Schemes refer to the rhyming pattern within a verse of poetry, and verses are used to describe the relationship between rhyme and meter in a poem.
Finally, stanzas are a group of lines that are within the verses of a poem. Stanzas follow a similar pattern and these patterns need to be respected in order for a piece of writing to be called a poem. Knowing the structure and components of a poem is the best way to work on your original pieces.
What Makes a Good Poem?
Anyone can put words on a piece of paper and make them look half-decent, but can everyone write well?
By following a few tips you can create a decent poem.
- Read poetry. By exposing yourself to as much poetry as you can you should be inspired to write beautiful pieces that have their own personality.
- Take advantage of all the tools and resources that you have at your disposal. When you’re an amateur poet, you’ll need all the help that you can get to become better. So, ask for help and get to know what helped more experienced poets.
- Remember that poetry tells stories. So, try to break down your main ideas and tell a story that people can relate to.
