Apps to Use for Studying

The idea of suggesting you use your smart phone to study is not to confuse you more, but to set you on the right path towards preparing for your matric year. We can tell you with certainty that whether you’re studying maths, science, English, or geography, revising with your smartphone can only be effective if you do it correctly without any distractions.

How can you stop yourself from getting distracted by your phone?

The average cellphone user spends at least 2 to 3 hours on the cellphone daily. How about you still spend your 3 hours on your phone daily during your matric year, but for the purpose of studying? Scrolling through your social media, viewing the latest news, and even checking photos on your phone are fun activities, but they are not productive as well. That is why we recommend that you start using your smartphone in order to revise and in order to scroll through learning platforms specifically meant for matric students.

Now you may agree that the smartphone is an excellent tool for revision, but how can you get started with using apps for revision purposes? Start by finding one app that you particularly like and that is appropriate to the content recommended particularly for matric students.

The type of app that you choose to use can either be quiz-like apps that tests your understanding in relation to the content you have already been taught. Apps like these are great particularly for revision purposes.

Another type of app that you would like to use for studying purposes is apps that are focused on reteaching concepts. Sometimes, you may feel that you need somewhat of a reexplanation of the work covered at school. Apps that have video tutorials as their main focus are excellent to use when you want to revisit content that you have already learnt.

Learning Apps for Grade 12

While some apps are excellent for high school students, not all the apps out there from the plethora of educational apps are suitable for grade 12 students.  Your phone can surely be a great resource to use for educational purposes provided you settle on the right apps for you.

Among all the apps out there, we suggest the following as being best for matric students whether you are writing your GDE exams or your IEB exams:

  • Matric Live: This Matric Live app is an app that is available on the App Store. This app is particularly great to iron out any difficulties with regard to subject content in subjects such as Life Sciences, Physical Sciences, Math Literacy, and Geography to mention but a few.
  • Grade 12 Study Guides: Available on the Google Play store is the Grade 12 Study Guides app that are best to use if you are looking for study guides for all subjects.
  • DorkK: If you are looking for ways to reap the benefits from online learning, you can resort to using the DorkK platform. As a way to seek revision lessons, this Netflix-inspired platform will work best for you.
  • My Top Dog: If you are looking for a customised app to use when preparing to pass your matric exams, this is the one to use. Covered on the My Top Dog website is content specific to CAPS, NCS & IEB

The abovementioned apps are but some of the apps that you can try out should you want to excel in this vital year. You may find it more desirable to study using by a specific app, but we do suggest that you make sure that you are not only using apps to study and revise content. Grade 12 is one of your most important school years as it determines the rest of your life, so you are better off using your cellphone as an added tool to study, but not the only tool. You must remember to reap the full benefits of all the apps, you must have an excellent internet connection.

Poor connection, unexpected power cuts, or loadshedding may hinder your progress should you only be relying on mobile apps for studying purposes.  Your phone is a pretty smart nifty little gadget, but your phone can only be as smart as you are. Should you be using your phone for the right purposes, you will discover new avenues for learning, finding extra study material, free online study guides, and even learning about a topic more in detail.

Excelling in your grade 12 year starts with the right mindset and the need to discover that which is beyond what is covered in your textbook. Your success this year will be determined by your ability to study smart. Study smarter by discovering the best apps for revising.

Tips When Using Mobile Learning Apps for Students

The biggest tip that we can give you is that your mobile device is not the only studying strategy that you can use during your matric year.

Which are the most effective revision techniques?

When it comes to studying well, you must remember that gaining the most knowledge is determined by how many resources you choose to use and the type of resources you rely on.  Having the right balance between using modern study methods like the smartphone apps and using traditional study methods like the textbook and past papers is a great idea.

Mobile apps are great, especially since you can make notes in the form of voice notes that you can listen to over and over again. However, learning independently by using an app should in no way replace learning with a tutor.

It is important to learn how to study independently by the time you reach Grade 12, but there may be certain subjects in which extra revision and remediation is still necessary. There is nothing wrong with relying on the services of a professional tutor to assist you in your weaker learning areas.

In fact, you can even ask your tutor to recommend an app that would be great to use when preparing for an exam in a specific subject. Don't think your knowledge of mobile phones can replace the expert advice offered by tutors.

Digital Learning Devices: The Future

Since your phone comes with apps, access to the internet, and other functions, you surely need to make the most of your device. You can use the notepad function on your mobile to take down study notes or the main points that your tutor mentions during a tutorial lesson.

If you are running out of time and you need to go somewhere, you can simply whip out your smartphone to take pictures of your notes, so that you can study on the way to the function or even during your bus ride home.

Using the calendar app on your device is an excellent suggestion. Planning out days to revise certain subjects and receiving revision reminders will be excellent. You can also stay abreast of important due dates and tutorial dates and times when you use the calendar app.

You can plan to use your mobile phone solely for revision purposes.

How to Study Smart for Exams?

During your matric year, it all boils down to how smart you study. While having a social life is great, you must remember that during your matric year, you need to devote much more time to studying and far less time to your social life. You need to make the most of your time and you will have enough time to get through everything provided that you don't waste your time.

How can you disconnect from your phone?

You might want to change the way you study to a more modern approach, so that you can remain more interested in studying. That is all well and good, however, you need to make sure you stay free from distraction while using your mobile device else you are wasting your time choosing your phone to assist you with your studies.

You must keep in mind that if independent study time is not at all working for you, you need to speak up. Let your parents know when studying time ends up being a procrastination session rather than a fruitful study session. If something is working for everyone else, it doesn't mean it will work for you. Your parents may choose to rope in a  Superprof tutor to keep you grounded and to help you to learn how to study smart.

Do what it takes so you can feel smarter after you study smarter.

Study first, play afterwards.Daniel D Palmer
